The Big Book Drive

presented by the JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SEATTLE

September 21-27, 2020

The Junior League of Seattle (JLS) focuses our volunteer efforts and resources on youth literacy. Positioning children for success requires not only effective literacy interventions, but also the collaborative and coordinated efforts of a diverse array of community stakeholders. Visit our Literacy page to read more about youth literacy and why we’ve chosen this focus area.

One of JLS’s strengths is our ability to be a catalyst for change in our community. We can take the burden off our partners by being a resource hub – providing best practices, organizational support, and trained volunteers. Many literacy organizations in Seattle have a need for books, but are either relying on small book drives organized by individuals or using their own resources to plan, organize, and execute these drives.

The Big Book Drive is a community-wide event where Junior League members, as well as the community at large, can donate new or used books. By creating The Big Book Drive, JLS not only provides the community a resource to responsibly re-purpose books they no longer need, but we’re also able to deliver books to our partners where, when, and how they need them.

The Big Book Drive 2020 will benefit Books to Prisoners, Eastside Baby Corner, Mary’s Place, Mercy Housing, Page Ahead, and Reading Partners. Each was chosen based on their unwavering commitment to supporting literacy in our community. We will also use donated books to stock the Little Free Library at the League office.

Due to the global pandemic, we are encouraging donations of new books purchased online. Most of our partners need children’s books, and you can find a great selection on our Amazon Wish List. Additionally, The Stranger has a great list of Seattle-area bookstores if you prefer to shop locally.

Want to donate a different or used book? Prefer to shop elsewhere? No problem! We’re also taking in-person donations at the Junior League of Seattle Office at the times below. Drop-off is on the east side of the building at the garage doors. While we are offering contact-free drop-off, we kindly ask that you wear a mask when making your donation.

Monday, September 21 through Friday, September 25:

  • 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, September 26 through Sunday, September 27:

  • 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Donation Guidelines:

We will take any book in good condition as a donation. Our partners have varied needs for books, from board books for toddlers, to YA novels for teens, to cookbooks and romance novels for adult readers. However, we ask that you please refrain from donating books that are in poor condition as books that have torn or missing pages or damaged covers cannot be forwarded to our partners.
