E.N.E.R.G.Y. - “Exercise and Nutrition to Empower our Region’s Growing Youth”
Over 9 million young people are considered overweight – that’s 16% of all children and teens. Children in families who are socio-economically challenged are at greater risk of being overweight, with one-quarter of school-aged patients overweight, and another quarter at risk for becoming overweight. The JLS E.N.E.R.G.Y. committee is dedicated to providing children with exercise and nutrition knowledge.
E.N.E.R.G.Y.’s goals are to educate and help children (and their parents) to improve their health and wellness. We will introduce education on fitness and healthy living, as well as how to live an active lifestyle and stay physically fit. By supplying the resources and education, we will ensure that they can create their own ideas and opportunities to be healthy in their own environment. E.N.E.R.G.Y. is giving us the opportunity as a League to help fight childhood obesity, an epidemic that is affecting at least 1/3 of the children and adolescents in the United States alone.
This year, E.N.E.R.G.Y. is partnering with some amazing local organizations such as the North Seattle Boys and Girls Club, Seattle Bike Works, Seattle Scores, the Y.M.C.A., and are working on a new spring event-a kids fun run or 5K!
We are thrilled to provide the League opportunities throughout the year to be involved with these partners and to work toward ending childhood obesity. Our hope is that by the end of the year, every League member will be knowledgeable and proactive on the fight of childhood obesity. This epidemic has solutions and knowledge that not only apply to children, but that we can all apply to our daily lives. We want to turn our members into advocates, sharing knowledge with people and spreading the word that this epidemic does have a solution. Knowledge is power! We can create awareness as a League and therefore help the community-at-large conquer this problem. What a powerful and amazing opportunity!
